White's Journal

On March 5th, 1787, John White's account of a journey out to Australia begins. He was the chief surgeon of the expedition to establish the penal colony at Botany Bay... where Sidney is today. Eleven ships. 1500 people, 778 of them convicts. Eight months to reach Botany Bay (link:Wikipedia). Only 34 deaths on the voyage.

The journal was published three years later, and it is a gorgeous, large book... 315 x 250mm, 55mm thick.Sixty-five hand coloured plates. Full of information about the founding of the colony, and also of the natural history found there. Ancillary gems such as "Diary of Winds, Weather, Temperature of the Air, &c.." at different times and places in the course of the journey. (Wikipedia link for John White.)

This web page doesn't begin to do this treasure justice, but it is all I can manage at this time. You can read the text, either in your bowser online, or from a download.

The variations in the paper colour are artifacts of the photography. It is a warm white, yellowy/ creamy/ irory, throughout. The colours in the parrot plate are accurate and typical.
