Overview- Milne/ Shepard/ Winnie-The-Pooh collecting

Other editions of AA Milne and EH Shepard's Winnie-The-Pooh books

(If you haven't seen the introductory material at the "parent" page of this page, please read it at some point.)

Of course, as with any great book, you will find re-bindings of various opulence. The Chealsea bindery did some very nice ones, for instance.

You might also be interested in an edition of all four books which was brought out on the 50th anniversary of the first edition of each book. They are superficially similar to the limp leather special edition... same artwork on cover and spine.

They were done in limited editions, signed by Christopher Robin Milne. I'm not aware of any copies being sold without the limitation plate, but they could, of course, exist.

I said above superficially similar to the limp leather special edition. However, fifty years on, and expectations and practices had changes. The books are probably more robust than the original. The covers are no longer limp; they are "normal" rigid boards... somewhat thicker than the limp leather covers. (The whole book of Winnie-the-Pooh is thicker.) This may or may not be something you would want.

To my taste, alas, the craftsmanship of the 50th anniversary edition is inferior to the original limp leather special binding...

On the covers, the gold embossing is not as delicate or as crisp. And inside the book, the contrast between ink and paper is not as good, particualarly in the illustrations. And the lines of the illustrations seem less thin, less crisp.

I liked the paper in the "new" edition slightly better, though.

As far as I am aware, they were only issued in the colors used for the original trade edition of each book.

For the 50th anniversary editions, I've seen copies of each book except The House At Pooh Corner advertised, and in the listings, it was stated that each book was one of 300 copies. I assume that The House At Pooh Corner print run was also 300 copies, and that it is just coincidence that I have not yet seen a listing to confirm that.

And then of course... there are the various derivative books... Winnie-The-Pooh in Latin, anyone? (That other great British (adopted) bear, Paddington, has also been translated to Latin, by the way, if you want two curiosities to sit nicely side by side on your bookshelves?)

I'm not aware of many spoof books deriving from Milne's wonderful collection. Certainly not as many as have sprung up inspired by Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, anyway. Various collections of Pooh Songbooks do exist.

And now you can return to the page with an overview of collecting the Winnie-The-Pooh books from AA Milne and EH Shepard... or, if you came here from there, just close the tab or window this is in, and you should find the overview page underneath it.
