How I got started

I'll understand if you skip this page... but it may amuse. It tells you of how I came to be aware of GF Cruchley's maps of London, and purchase one.

This page is a sub-page off of my pages about Cruchley's maps. Even if this page is of limited interest, I hope you will visit the main pages.

I was viewing an auction of miscellaneous furniture, jewelry, paintings, etc... and found just one map in the several hundred lots of that sale. "Cruchley's New Plan of London/ Improved/ Including The East and West India Docks", it boldly proclaimed across it's top.

In my innocence, I sent an email to a friend who is a map dealer. "Is Cruchley a significant maker of maps of London?", I asked.

What should I pay?

All I wanted to know, at first, was "is this a valuable map?"

Value depends on how much and how many people want to have the object in question. (Demand) And how many of them there are. (Supply).

When I invest in the stock market, one block of 100 shares is much like any other, and the pool of buyers and sellers is huge.

While my book and map collecting aren't good forms of investment, they do allow me to convert numbers on a bank statement into something of intrinsic value, and into something that will give me pleasure, from its beauty or significance. (It's the transaction costs which will kill you, if you think you are "investing". Try working behind the counter at a book dealers for a day if you think they take too much between buying stock and selling it.)

But with books and maps, vs stocks, "the quest" is so much more fun! Each copy of something is in a different condition, has different "association" elements. The relatively small pool of buyers and sellers means the marketplace is less boring.

But! To get back to the work of Cruchley!...

Revisions....

THIS PAGE IS UNFINISHED AT THIS TIME... sorry...
